What is Therapeutic Touch? Krieger-Kunz Therapeutic Touch® is a holistic, evidence based therapy that incorporates the intentional and compassionate use of universal energy to promote balance and well being. More concretely, it is a way of consciously using your heart and your hands (either hands-on or not) to promote healing. It was developed in the early 1970’s by Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, Professor of Nursing, Emerita, New York University and Dora Kunz. It is based on the belief that a human being is a complex system of energies; disease may occur when there is congestion, depletion, and/or imbalance of energy. A Therapeutic Touch treatment is administered with the intent to help a person re-pattern energy to facilitate healing.

What has Therapeutic Touch helped? A few examples:

  • Anxiety / stress, with an average 2-4 minutes induction of a relaxation response.
  • High blood pressure.
  • All types of pain.
  • Sleep
  • Side effects of chemotherapy.
  • For comfort during labor and delivery.

See the research section on therapeutic-touch.org for more. Of course this material will be a very fascinating part of the class discussion.

Is Therapeutic Touch just for people? Plants also respond well to Therapeutic Touch. Dogs love it. So do cats, but they usually aren’t as direct in their acknowledgement. Dog trainers use it in their work. It has been used successfully with guinea pigs, horses, birds, and more.
